I've been neglecting my relationship with MAD lately, but was re-inspired by an old copy lying about the house to check out some new copies.

In addition to the regular issue, there was something called Mad Classics, and the subscription form in the front of the magazine says something about ordering regular issues + the 'classics'.

So are these 'classics' a new name and watered-down format for the super specials? Do the super specials still make their way to the shelves, or are they now a fading memory?

I think the classics are indeed a watered down version of the Super Specials. I used to buy the Super Specials same as the regular issues. Finally I just decided to subscribe to the magazine and forget the Classics or Super Specials. They were mostly just repeat information anyways.

Super Specials have always been good for the older, retro stuff, if you're into that. The one classic that I saw seems to be the magazine equivalent of one of those sitcom episodes filled with clips from the last few seasons.
